Description

A pair of houses, later shops and offices, was built in the late 18th century and altered in the mid-19th century. They are located on the east side of Market Cross in Malmesbury. The houses are rendered with limestone dressings, brick gable stacks, and a pantile roof, arranged with a double-depth plan. Each house is two storeys high, with a three-window front. Originally, the front was symmetrical with rusticated quoins and a coped parapet. Doorways were originally positioned below the middle windows, featuring architraves and bracketed canopies, and the windows had architraves and horned plate-glass sashes, with the inner windows closer together. Number 3 now has a mid-19th century shop front with incised pilaster jambs and consoles supporting a fascia, including a half-glazed door and a plate-glass window. Number 1 has an early 19th century three-light shop front with a cornice and thin mullions. The right-hand gable and a rear two-window range have windows with architraves. The interior was altered in the late 20th century. The building occupies a prominent position on the east side of the Market Cross square.
