Description
The cross in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary dates from the 14th century, with a mid-19th century addition. It is made of red sandstone ashlar and Ham stone, standing about 6 meters high. The cross has an octagonal shape and rests on three steps with chamfered nosing and offsets at the base. The socket features oblong sunk panels adorned with figures representing the Apostles and scenes from the life of Christ. The octagonal shaft includes a tripartite, trefoil-headed sculptural niche that contains a central figure believed to be John the Baptist, flanked by a monk and a bishop. At the top of the shaft is a cross added in the mid-19th century. The sculptural panels are noted as an unusual feature, and Pooley's "Old Crosses of Somerset," published in 1877, describes it as "an unrivalled example of Fourteenth Century work."
