Description

The wall and gatepiers fronting the road at Lydeard House date from the late 18th century and early 19th century. They are constructed of red sandstone random rubble and ashlar, featuring limestone and Ham stone dressings. The western half consists of five bays of red sandstone random rubble with flat-topped square piers and a canted wall, complemented by a curved corner flanking the entrance. To the right, there are eleven bays of coursed, dressed red sandstone, with ashlar piers and a limestone balustrade topped with flat coping. The walls extend past the gatepiers for about five meters, ending in square piers, one of which has a pineapple finial, while the other is missing.

The gatepiers are square and made of banded red sandstone and vermiculated limestone, standing about four meters high. They have flat tops with an ovolo-moulded cornice and a cavetto-moulded square plinth. Arched openings flank the gatepiers, featuring keystones with recessed vermiculated panels and rusticated jambs alternating between red sandstone and white limestone. The wooden gates are not included in the listing.

To the east, the wall continues as red sandstone random rubble, rising at intervals to the height of a two-storey cottage that abuts the wall, with flat sandstone coping. In the corner to the right, there is a 20th-century plank door with a wooden lintel, located near an arched opening almost opposite the churchyard gateway. This arch features a keystone with a steeply chamfered archivolt, rusticated limestone jambs, and a red sandstone plinth, along with a 19th-century plank door that is partially studded.
