Description
Five's Tower is located in the car park of the Lethbridge Arms Inn and is likely from the late 18th century. It is constructed from red sandstone random rubble and red brick in Flemish bond. The tower stands about 12 meters high, with its facade facing north. The front is made of brick and features a shaped gable that has slightly projecting angled, stepped wings. The rear elevation is made of random rubble and includes a central stepped buttress that reaches to the base of the gable. Attached to the facade is a single-storey storehouse with steeply pitched double Roman tile roof and random rubble walls. This storehouse has a gable end opening with a hoist, but it is not included in the listing. The game of fives was very popular in Somerset until the mid-19th century, and this tower was originally used for that game against the church tower. It is the only surviving purpose-built fives tower in Taunton Deane.
