Description

The Old Mill and Millhouse, along with the waterwheel, is a disused flour mill and millhouse located on Mill Lane in Bishop's Lydeard. The building dates back to the 18th century and was extended in the early 19th century with the addition of the millhouse. It is currently undergoing renovation. The house is rendered, while the mill features colourwashed rubble. The structure has a hipped roof with overhanging eaves and a soffit board, covered with asbestos slate on the house and corrugated iron on the left return over the mill. Brick stacks rise from the eaves on the right side and at the junction between the mill and house.

The property has an "L"-shaped plan facing southwest, with the mill angled to the east following the course of the stream. It is two stories tall, all under one roof, and has a facade divided into five bays distinguished by pilaster quoins. All window openings are blocked with corrugated iron sheets, except for the outer bay on the left (the mill), which is permanently blocked and painted to simulate glazing bars. The entrance to the house is located center right and features a six-panel door with a tracery fanlight and a flat-roofed porch supported by slender wooden columns. To the left is an entrance to a service bay, and the outer bay on the left has double doors under a wooden lintel, accessed by a three-step wooden ladder leading to the entrance of the mill.

An overshot waterwheel is situated on the left return and is in very poor condition. Some machinery is said to remain inside. The interior has not been viewed, but renovation is currently taking place at the rear of the mill, although the entire property has deteriorated over time.
