Description

Couch Mill is a mill and mill house dating from the late 18th century, which was remodeled in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from rendered rubble stone and cob, topped with a steeply pitched rag slate roof and featuring brick chimneys at the gabled ends of the mill house. There is a projecting stack on the left-hand gable end. An adjoining mill on the right has a shallower slate roof with gabled ends and is unrendered.

The mill house has a single-depth, two-room layout with a cross passage plan and a 19th-century extension to the rear. The front is almost symmetrical with three windows. It features two 2-light 20th-century timber casements with glazing bars, flanking a partly glazed door that is topped by a gabled porch supported by timber posts. There are three gabled half dormers with 2-light timber casement windows and wavy bargeboards.

The mill itself is a long, one-and-a-half-storey building with a slightly lower pitched roof. It has a central wide timber stable door with a reused timber lintel above, and a slate porch. To the left, there is a small single-pane window, and above it, slightly to the left, is a gabled half dormer window with a 9-pane fixed casement. To the right, there is a lean-to made of stone and brick under a corrugated roof.

Inside the mill, there are two horizontal gearing systems preserved in the cog pit, along with two in-situ millstones and a sack hoist. The mill once had two overshot waterwheels, which have since been dismantled. It has not been in commercial use since the 1920s.
