Description

Lower Trebarret is a house dating from the early 17th century, with a wing added in the mid-18th century. The building is constructed from rubble stone with cob and is partly rendered. It features a slate roof, which is hipped on the west side, and has a slightly lower projecting wing with a gable end facing north. There are brick stacks for the projecting chimneys on the east side and a stone lateral stack on the north elevation.

The 17th-century part of the house has a two-room layout with a vestibule on the west side. It is possible that the house originally extended further west with a service wing to the right of the cross passage (now the vestibule) and a hall and parlour to the left, as it currently stands. The 18th-century wing projects to create an L-shaped plan.

The house is two storeys tall with an asymmetrical front. The north elevation of the 17th-century section features a lateral stack near the center, flanked on the left by a three-light timber casement window with glazing bars in a later projecting bay that has a sloping slate roof. On the right, there is a later projecting stone and render porch with a sloping slate roof, which includes an entrance door with an ovolo-moulded lintel and scroll stops. The first floor has two two-light timber casements with glazing bars. The later wing, which projects forward on the left, is unrendered on two sides. Its west elevation has a door near the center under a sloping roof supported by timber posts, with a two-light timber casement window with glazing bars to the right on both the ground and first floors. There are blocked openings to the left and above the door.

Inside the 17th-century part, there are three simple covered timber screens that divide the vestibule, staircase, and parlour. A heavy chamfered beam is located at the junction of the hall and staircase. The first floor features covered plank and muntin screens, and the roof space is not accessible. Visible elements include chamfered cambered collars and face-pegged trenched purlins.
