Description

31 and 32 Waterlip are a row of almshouses that have been converted into two dwellings. A central datestone on the first floor reads "Domino et Pauperibus E.S. 1699," indicating their historical significance. The buildings feature coursed rubble with a weathered string course at the first floor level, eaves, and a 19th-century double-Roman tiled roof with brick stacks. They are two storeys high and consist of three bays on each side.

On the left side, there are 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars, while the right side has two-light moulded stone-mullioned windows set in moulded freestone surrounds, along with two 19th-century type two-light casements. There are two door openings: to the right, a vertically ribbed door in a chamfered freestone surround, and to the left, a 20th-century plank door with a 20th-century hood.

Additionally, 20th-century garages have been added to each return, but these are not considered of special interest. This building is an unusual example of rural almshouses and is likely the only one of its kind on Mendip.
