Description
The Almshouses are a pair of almshouses built around 1859, as noted in a 1879 publication. They are constructed from dressed Heavitree brecchia and feature a slate roof with axial and end stacks that have brick shafts. The layout consists of a single depth plan with a central passageway flanked by two houses, each with two rooms. A significant late 20th-century conversion has resulted in the blocking of the front doorways on either side of the central passageway. The building stands two storeys high and has a symmetrical front with four windows and four gables. The central doorway leads to the passage, while the left and right doorways are blocked. The first floor has four 2-light casement windows with diamond leaded panes, and the ground floor features similar 3-light windows. The Almshouses are a notable landmark in the centre of Exminster.
