Description

Pynes Cottage is a house that likely dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob and features a thatched roof that is hipped at both ends. The building has an axial stack and a right end stack. The current layout consists of three rooms arranged in a single depth, with the end rooms heated and an entrance located to the right of the center, leading into a small lobby in front of the staircase. The two rooms on the right side probably originated from a late 18th century two-room plan house, which included a central lobby and staircase, likely with both rooms heated from end stacks. The room on the left may have been a former outbuilding that has been integrated into the living space, now heated by the former left gable end stack, which has been converted to an axial stack. The fireplace in the central room has been blocked off. The ground floor fenestration on the right side indicates that Pynes Cottage was used as a shop in the late 19th century.

The cottage is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical four-window front. There is a 20th-century front door to the right of the center, which is sheltered by a flat porch canopy supported by brackets. The four windows on the left side are 20th-century casements, while the right side features four-pane plate glass sashes, except for the ground floor right window, which is a four-light window with two panes per light. Inside, the left room has exposed cross beams and joists, and there is a wide staircase with plank partitions on either side. The roof trusses over the right end of the house are collar rafter and pegged, but there is no access to the roof space over the left end. Pynes Cottage has group value with the Almshouses.
