Description

These are a range of almshouses on Claypits Lane, Shrivenham, dating back to an endowment in 1641, but largely rebuilt in the 19th century, with significant remodelling and expansion in 1850. The buildings are constructed of rubble stone with a brick attic. They feature a brick dentil cornice and a gabled roof covered in stone tiles, with a stack at each end of the side wall - one of stone and one of brick. Further stacks with brick caps are present at the rear. The almshouses are arranged as a single storey with an attic. Modern 2-light casement windows are found in the attics, and 2-light windows with wooden lintels are on the ground floor. Each pair of cottages shares a plank and batten door accessed via a gabled porch with machine tiles. The cottages built in 1850 (number 8) include gabled dormers with 2-pane casements, a roughcast attic storey, and a glazed porch.
