Description
Aubrey's Almshouses are a group of almshouses, originally six dwellings but now three, dating to circa 1630. They stand on a brick plinth and are timber-framed and plaster-clad, with a plain tile roof featuring three gables to the front. There are three brick stacks at the rear. The buildings are arranged as three paired units.
The architectural style is characterized by a single storey with an attic. The six-window front has lattice leaded lights with central wood mullions; some inserted casements are also present, all set within close studding. The gables, supported by moulded bressumers, feature two 2-light casements. These retain some leaded lights, ornamental bracing, and moulded barge-boards with pendants. Paired plank doors are set in moulded frames, each with a simple wood hood. The right returned side also features close studding and passing braces.
The interior contains two winder stairs with octagonal newels, displaying ogee stop chamfered details, along with 19th-century plank screens. On the first floor, the exposed framing is visible, and there are two 19th-century four-panel doors. On the ground floor, a plank door leads to a stair cupboard, and the ceiling features ogee stop chamfered beams. The almshouses were converted into three dwellings in 1959.
