Description

43 and 45 Eign Gate are houses that have been converted into shops. They date from the early 17th century but have a late 19th-century front. The buildings are made of painted brick, with pantiles on the front and rear pitch and slate on the front roof gables. They are two storeys high with an attic and feature a four-window range, including four-light sashes with stone sills and lintels. The buildings have dentilled quoins with beading and a moulded wood cornice at the eaves. There are two brick-fronted gable dormers with ornamental barge-boards above 20th-century, two-over-two sashes. The late 19th-century shop fronts have central part-glazed panelled doors, flanked by plate-glass windows with canted returns, all under moulded fascia-boards and hoods, supported by enriched stop-consoles on moulded pilasters. On the left side, there is a weatherboarded gable with oak purlins protruding.

Inside No. 43, there is a 19th-century winder staircase with stick balusters leading from the first floor. The second floor features a V strut truss with chamfered purlins visible, along with two 19th-century and one 18th-century plank doors. The first floor has a 17th-century stop-moulded ceiling frame and architraves around the windows. The ground floor also has a 17th-century stop-moulded ceiling frame. The cellar is inaccessible.
