Description

Bewell House is a mid-18th century house, now used as offices, situated on Bewell Street, Hereford. The house is constructed of brick with a Welsh slate roof and brick end stacks. It has three storeys and a five-window front. The windows are 9/9 sashes in moulded cases, set within gauged brick flat arches, with 6/6 sashes above. A central entrance features steps leading to a panelled door and ornamental fanlight, topped by a restored 20th-century open pedimented wooden hood supported by consoles and pilasters. Flanking the entrance are paired 9/9 sashes under gauged brick flat arches. A moulded cornice runs along the top of the facade. A two-storey wing was added in the 19th century to the left side, featuring paired 6/6 sashes under gauged brick flat arches. The house underwent thorough restoration in approximately 1985.

Inside, a large dogleg staircase has turned balusters and a moulded string and rail, leading to the attic. The attic contains a plank door. The second floor retains exposed timbers, while the first floor has cornices, picture rails, window architraves, and a four-panel door. A 18th-century fireplace with a modillioned cornice is also present. The ground floor features six-panel doors with enriched architraves, as well as six- and four-panel doors with architraves, cornices, panelled window shutters and reveals, and skirting boards. The cellar has flagstone floors, brick-arched bins, plank doors, and stone and brick-lined walls.
