Description
These are a row of six houses built around 1822, located on the west side of Edgar Street, Hereford. They are brick-built with a Welsh slate roof and have six axial brick stacks. The houses are arranged with a six-unit plan.
The exterior presents three storeys and an attic, with a six-window range on each house. The windows are predominantly 6/6 sashes, with painted stone sills and reveals, set under segmental arches. Above these are smaller 3/3 sashes. The building features brick modillion eaves which extend to form a pediment over the central two-unit projecting gable. The three left-hand units have entrances on both the left and right, while the remaining units have entrances on only one side. Many retain original six-panel doors, with cast-iron fanlights set within semicircular, gauged brick arches, flanked by sashes under segmental arches, all with painted reveals and stone sills.
Internally, No.37 has a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and turned newels, and retains 4-panel doors on the second and first floors. The cellar is brick-lined. No.39 has a 20th-century wrought-iron staircase; the second floor retains an early 19th-century hobgrate and fire surround, architraves to windows, and 4-panel doors. The first floor also has an early 19th-century fire surround, alcoves, 4-panel doors, skirting, and a ceiling rose. The ground floor features a wall cupboard, picture rail, a 4-panel door, and a lined archway to the hall. The cellar is brick-lined with an arched stack base and a brick floor. No.43 has a dogleg staircase with stick balusters, fireplaces with wood surrounds on the second floor, wall cupboards, and 4-panel doors. The first floor includes a fireplace with a wood surround, 4-panel doors, and a hob grate with a missing surround. Ground floor features plank doors and 4-panel doors. The cellar has a brick-lined interior and a chamfered ceiling beam. No.47 also has a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and turned newels. The second floor retains 4-panel doors and fire surrounds; the first floor has a fireplace, wall cupboards, an architraves to windows, and 4-panel doors. The ground floor features 4-panel doors and wall cupboards. The cellar is brick-lined with stone-lined steps and a chamfered ceiling beam. It is believed that the remaining units may have similar staircases.
