Description
51 Eign Gate is a shop and dwelling, originally built in the 17th century with many alterations. The building features a combination of timber-frame and brick construction, with sham timber-framing on the front. It has a 19th-century plain tile roof that includes three gables at the front, pierced ridge tiles, and Welsh slate on the rear pitch. There is a brick stack at the rear gable. The structure is two storeys tall with a cellar and has a four-window range that includes three early 20th-century cross-windows and, to the right, a four-light mullion and transom window, all set in moulded cases with leaded lights. The barge-boards are pierced and scalloped, featuring enriched pendants. The shop front, dating from the 20th century, has central double doors beneath a cambered hood that may date from the 18th century. It is flanked by plate-glass windows with ringed glazing shafts and clerestory lights, along with a moulded fascia-board and bressumer. The right side of the building has a returned shop front and retains 17th-century box-framing with brick infill. Inside, there is a mutilated 18th-century dogleg staircase with a moulded rail. The first floor features four-panel doors, an 18th-century two-panel door, chamfered ceiling beams, and a 19th-century fireplace.
