Description

No. 44 Berrington Street is a chapel that has been converted into a club, dating from the mid-18th century. The building features a rendered exterior and a Welsh slate roof that is hipped to the left and higher on the right, along with a roughcast brick stack.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a six-window range. The central window is a tripartite light with glazing bars and a Gothic-glazed head, flanked by two windows on the left and three 6/6 sash windows with Gothic-glazed heads on the right. The windows are framed by sandstone ashlar architraves that include springers and keyblocks. A moulded stone cornice runs along the parapet, topped with a central open pediment. The central entrance is from the 20th century, while to the left there is a recessed late 19th-century door behind a blocked overlight, along with a blocked window. To the right, there are a round-headed 6/9 sash window and a Gothic-glazed 6/6 sash window, both with moulded cases, as well as a recessed door behind a blocked overlight, all featuring ashlar facings.

The right side of the building is roughcast, revealing a probable earlier gable. Inside, there is a late 19th-century staircase. On the first floor, there are four 4-panel doors, panelled risers leading to a Venetian window with an architrave, two 19th-century fireplaces, and 19th-century panelling. The main auditorium contains remnants of the former 19th-century chapel.
