Description
The building is a Conservative Club, situated on East Street, Hereford. It largely dates to the 18th century, although it incorporates a core from the early 17th century. The exterior is painted brick with a steep-pitched Welsh slate roof, and features three brick buttresses, ridge stacks, and end stacks. It has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a six-window front. The left side of the building features three 6/6 sash windows. To the right are a 6/6 sash flanked by two 8/8 sashes, all under segmental arches. The front has moulded and modillioned wood eaves, and four box dormers, two with 3/3 sashes and two with 6/6 sashes. The entrance to No. 101 has a 19th-century four-panel door and blocked overlight, both under a simple flat hood supported by fluted pilasters. The central right entrance, leading to the Club, has early 20th-century double doors with an overlight and panelled reveals, also under a flat hood with fluted pilasters. Six early 20th-century plain sashes are located to the No. 101 side, set under gauged brick flat arches, while those to the No. 102 side are set within stucco. A storeyband runs overall.
Inside, there is an early 18th-century dogleg staircase with a moulded rail and turned balusters, some grouped, leading to the second floor, accompanied by a coloured light. A similar staircase with turned balusters ascends to an upper level. The attic of one wing contains early 17th-century timber framing and roof. On the second floor, there are four-panel doors, along with a two-panel door, a wall light with crown glass, an arch with a wood architrave, and a fireplace. The first floor includes an 18th-century marble corner fireplace, a coved ceiling with a central rose, 6-panel doors, another 18th-century fireplace, and in one wing, a panelled room with decorated plasterwork set against the 17th-century timber frame, additionally featuring a fireplace with a carved overmantel. The ground floor has a ceiling cornice, and the wing includes a 17th-century moulded ceiling frame and 20th-century panelling. The cellar is mostly brick-lined, containing a massive, chamfered ceiling beam and a three-panel door.
