Description
The building at 99 and 100 East Street comprises a house, now used as shops, with an early 19th-century front applied to a 17th-century core. The front is painted brick, with a Welsh slate roof and a brick end stack. The building is three storeys high, with a cellar, and has a three-window front. The windows are 6/6 sashes under segmental arches, with two 3/6 sashes on the upper floor. A shop front from the early 20th century is on the left-hand side, featuring moulded glazing shafts and a half-glazed door with a transom light, all beneath a restored fascia board. To the right (number 100) is a shop front from the early 20th century with a half-glazed 2-panel door, a blocked transom light, grooved pilasters and a shop window. The left return gable shows 19th-century refronting and raising over a mutilated 17th-century timber truss. The rear is weatherboarded and timber-framed.
The interior of number 99 features a stick baluster staircase, a 19th-century fireplace on the first floor and a four-panel door. The cellar has a brick vaulted ceiling. Number 100 contains a winder staircase with stick balusters, a four-panel door, a 19th-century fireplace, a wall cupboard and a two-panel door on the second floor. Group value lies in its contribution to the historic character of East Street.
