Description
16 and 17 Church Street are shops and dwellings dating from the late 18th century. The buildings are constructed of brick and feature a hipped slate roof with a parapet on the right side. They rise to three storeys and have a four-window range. On the right, there are 6/6 sash windows with old glass, and above them, 3/6 sash windows. To the left, there are early 20th-century 2/2 sash windows, all set under gauged brick flat arches. There are also blind semicircular gauged brick arches and brick modillion eaves. The ground floor has 20th-century shop fronts and an entrance leading to the upper floors.
Inside No. 16, the ground floor has a late plastered ceiling frame, and the cellar is mainly stone-lined. In No. 17, the second floor features plank doors and a late plastered ceiling frame, along with a wall cupboard that has a 19th-century plank door. The ground floor has an exposed ceiling frame from the late period, and the cellar is also mainly stone-lined with chamfered ceiling beams.
