Description
24 and 25 Church Street are shops and dwellings dating from the early 17th century. The buildings are constructed of timber-frame and render, featuring a twin gable plain tile roof, with a higher slate roof on the right rear. They are two storeys tall and have a two-window range, with 20th-century metal casements set between the studding and plain barge boards under moulded wood eaves. The shop fronts, which include entrances to the right, were restored around 1970.
Inside, the first floor has exposed timber-frame on the rear wall and chamfered arch braces. The Mayor's Room, part of the structure of No. 24 but now accessed from No. 23, contains 17th-century plaster moulding of the City Coat of Arms and a heavily enriched moulded and decorated plaster ceiling. The ground floor features exposed timber-frame and chamfered ceiling beams. The cellar has a stone vaulted ceiling, a plank door set in a chamfered stone four-centred arch, and stone winder steps.
