Description
No. 23 Church Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the later 18th century and has an earlier core. The building is constructed of brick and covered with old plain tiles. It has two storeys and features a three-window range with 20th-century, three-over-six sash windows set under gauged brick flat arches. The eaves are adorned with brick modillion. The entrance is located to the right and includes a 20th-century glazed door with a painted fanlight, all beneath a moulded open pediment hood supported by consoles and a gauged brick semicircular arch. To the left, there is a 20th-century shop front.
Inside, the house features an 18th-century dogleg staircase with a moulded rail and turned balusters. On the first floor, there is a coved ceiling and a Mayor's parlour, which is part of the structure of No. 24. This room contains 17th-century plaster moulding of the City Coat of Arms and a heavily enriched moulded and decorated plaster ceiling, along with an exposed post. The ground floor showcases exposed timber-framing, and the cellar is stone-lined.
