Description
No. 20 Church Street is a house primarily built in the 18th century, featuring a brick exterior that covers a core dating back to the 14th century. The structure is made of brick and timber-frame, topped with a slate roof and has a coursed sandstone rubble stack with a brick chimney. It consists of three bays with later additions.
Inside, the house includes a medieval hall from around 1350 to 1400, notable for its crown post roof, which is the only one of its kind in Hereford. There are also two original ogee-moulded entrance doors. The south wall features a well-preserved original window at the first floor level, consisting of four cusped ogee-arched headed lights. Below this, on the ground floor, is another well-preserved four-light window of a simpler design but from the same period. Graffiti on the west gable reads, "Daniel Watts 1726."
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the house was home to the Cathedral Organist and was frequently visited by Sir Edward Elgar, who began several major works in a designated "composing room" within the house. It is currently undergoing extensive restoration.
