Description

The Precentor's House is a house located in Hereford Cathedral Close, dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of brick and features a hipped Welsh slate roof, with brick buttress stacks that have returned storeybands on the left side.

The exterior is symmetrical, comprising three storeys and a five-window range. It has six-over-six sash windows in moulded cases set beneath segmental arches, with a storeyband above. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with an ornamental overlight, all framed in a moulded case and topped with a moulded wood flat hood supported by fluted pilasters. This entrance is flanked by pairs of six-over-six sash windows, with a storeyband above. On the right side, there are two large two-over-two sash windows under segmental arches on the first floor, with a storeyband and two-over-two sashes above.

Inside, the house features an 18th-century open-well staircase with bobbin balusters, a moulded string, a newel, and a panelled dado leading to the first floor. The first floor has twelve-over-eight sash windows with overlights, panelled risers, shutters, and architraves around the windows, as well as a picture-rail with swagged festoons, skirting, and architraves for the doors. There are window seats at two of the rear windows. The ground floor hall includes part-glazed panelled doors and a screen with segmental heads, panelled risers in the rear bay, skirting, and architraves around the doors.

The cellar is stone-lined, features some flagstones, and has a plank door leading to the exterior.
