Description

The Old Deanery House is a house that now serves as a school, dating from the 19th century but with earlier origins. It is constructed of dressed sandstone and features a plain tile roof with various brick stacks. The building has an E-shaped plan with gable wings and stands two storeys high with an attic. The facade has a nine-window range, showcasing plain sashes set in splayed moulded ashlar reveals and architraves, along with a mullion window containing two plain sashes in the gables.

At the center, there is an Early English style gable porch with studded plank doors, flanked by similar window arrangements and a chamfered ashlar plinth. On the right side, there are seven 6/6 sashes, some dating from the late 19th century, in ashlar reveals beneath stone lintels, and eight similar sashes on the ground floor under relieving arches. To the left, there is a further gable wing with 3-light and 2-light stone mullion windows featuring 4/4 sashes, along with stone stacks topped with brick caps and scattered fenestration.

Inside, the house features an early 19th-century staircase with a moulded rail, turned balusters, and moulded newels with finials, as well as a mid-19th-century open-well staircase with cast-iron balusters. The second floor includes a 18th-century fireplace, a 19th-century fireplace, and a 19th-century moulded fireplace with an overmantel, along with panelling and a coved ceiling. The first floor has late 19th-century 4-panel and 6-panel doors, an early 19th-century fireplace with a marble surround, a moulded ceiling frame, and a ceiling cornice. The ground floor features margin-glazed overlights, 6-panel doors, a 19th-century tiled fireplace and overmantel, 4-panel doors with architraves (including display rails), a 19th-century fireplace, a decorated plaster ceiling, a 19th-century cast-iron fireplace, bookshelves, and an 18th-century fireplace with a marble surround. The cellar includes a 19th-century 6-panel door, a plank door, and a brick vault.
