Description
No. 14 Church Street is a shop and dwelling with a core dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, and an early 19th-century shop front. The building has a stucco front that covers earlier timber framing and features a Welsh slate roof. The first floor juts out over a side passage. It stands three storeys high and has a two-window range with 8/8 sash windows in moulded cases, while the upper windows are 4/4 sashes from the 20th century. The early 19th-century shop front includes a central half-glazed door flanked by canted windows with moulded glazing shafts. To the left is a six-panel door, and there is a moulded fascia board with a hood above, supported by moulded pilasters.
Inside, the first floor at the rear features an 18th-century fireplace with an overmantel, bolection mouldings, panelling, a dado, and 18th-century wall cupboards. The cellar has an earth floor and early masonry. The roof structure consists of queen post trusses with many surviving wattle-and-daub infill panels, and there is exposed timber framing throughout the remaining floor levels. This building is noted as one of the most complete examples of 16th and 17th-century timber-framed construction in the city.
