Description
No. 3 College Precincts is a house that has been converted into a club, built around 1860. It features reddish-brown brick with flat arches made of gauged red brick, stone sills, and a slate roof. The building has three storeys plus an attic, with three first-floor windows. The first floor includes a central canted oriel window with one-over-one horned sashes, flanked by tall eight-over-eight sashes, and has blind boxes. The second floor also has eight-over-eight sashes, while the ground floor contains two eight-over-eight sashes. All windows are set in plain reveals with quoins and sills, and have flat arches of gauged brick. The wide eaves are supported by brackets. The entrance on the left features a four-panel door, with the upper panels glazed and adorned with ornate grills, while the lower panels are flush with roll-moulding. Above the door is an overlight with glazing bars, set in plain reveals and topped with a flat arch and quoins. A gabled roof dormer contains a casement window.
Inside, the building retains a dogleg staircase on the left side, which has stick balusters and a run-out handrail with carved tread ends. Original joinery and plasterwork can be seen, including panelled shutters on some windows, as well as a moulded cornice and ceiling rose on the first floor. The house occupies an important site as part of the setting for the Cathedral Church of Christ and St Mary. All the listed buildings in College Precincts create a cohesive group with the Cathedral.
