Description
Burgage House is a house that now serves as a guest house, dating from around 1760 with later alterations. It is constructed of reddish-brown brick laid in Flemish bond, featuring flat arches made of red gauged brick and artificial stone keystones, stone sills, and a cornice. The roof is covered with plain tiles, and there are renewed stacks on the left side and two at the rear, all banded and topped with pots. The building has a double-depth plan with a central hallway and stands three storeys high, with a half-basement on the right side. The first floor has two windows on the left and four on the right, all fitted with 6/6 flush sash windows, except for a tripartite 6/6 window located off-centre to the right, which is flanked by 2/2 sash windows. All windows have flat arches and fluted keystones with cornices, except for the second floor, where the keystones are plain. The half-basement on the right has two openings, one of which is blocked, and the other has a grill, both with flat arches. A continuous roll-moulded band runs along the ground floor on the right. The building is crowned with a cornice that features ovolo-step-ovolo-step-cavetto moulding and a blocking course.
The entrance is off-centre to the left, leading up two renewed steps to a five-panel door. The lower wide flush panel has a reeded surround, while the other panels are depressed with disc moulding. The doorcase has plain reveals and palm-leaf caps, a frieze with an oval motif, and a fanlight with decorative radial glazing bars topped by an open pediment.
Inside, the house retains an openwell staircase with ornate cast-iron balusters and a wreathed handrail. Original plasterwork and joinery include panelled shutters on some windows. Burgage House occupies an important site as part of the setting for the Cathedral Church of Christ and St Mary, and all the listed buildings in College Precincts form a cohesive group with the Cathedral.
