Description

28 and 29 College Street are two houses that have been converted into a shop and offices, with a flat above the house on the right. They were built between 1808 and 1832, with later additions and alterations, including changes made in the 1980s to the ground floor. The buildings are constructed of pinkish-brown brick, painted at the ground floor on the right, laid in Flemish bond with flat arches made of red gauged brick and stone sills. The slate roof features party-wall and left end brick stacks with oversailing courses and pots.

The structure has three storeys and features six first-floor windows arranged in pairs of three. The first-floor windows include 8/8, 6/6, two 8/8, 6/6, and 8/8 sashes. The second floor has 4/8, 6/6, two 4/8, 6/6, and 8/8 sashes. All windows are set in shallow reveals, with flat arches of gauged brick and sills. On the ground floor, from left to right, there is a 2/2 horned sash window, a renewed plate-glass door in plain reveals topped with a cornice, a renewed shop front, another 2/2 horned sash window, and an entrance featuring a four-panel door with glazed upper panels and an overlight in a timber doorcase with a cornice. There is also a 2/2 horned sash window and a blocked opening. All windows and the right opening have flat arches and sills, and the building is topped with a modillion eaves cornice.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the buildings do not appear on Young's Map from around 1808 but are shown on Clements's Map from 1832.
