Description
Ye Olde Talbot Hotel, formerly known as No. 14 Sidbury, is a former group of three houses that now operates as a hotel. It likely dates from around 1500 to 1599, with later additions and alterations, including a refronting around 1800 and a range added to the rear around 1970. The building is timber-framed with stucco arcades and a plain tile roof, arranged in an L-plan. It has two storeys with an attic and features nine first-floor windows. All windows are 6/6 sashes in near-flush frames, except for two on each floor on the right, which are 8/8 sashes in plain reveals with sills. The centre of the ground floor has a shop front with pilasters and a frieze, which is now bricked in, incorporating a glazed door with a blind overlight. An embattled low parapet conceals a roof dormer, and there are exposed square panels of timber framing and a wall plate on the right return.
Inside, the wall to the right retains small square panels of timber framing, including the main post. The interior features a wealth of chamfered beams and rafters, many of which are likely imported. Historically, a room at the rear on the right is said to have held Worcester assizes and is reputed to have been the headquarters of Charles II during the Battle of Worcester.
