Description
26 College Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It was built around 1808 to 1832 and has undergone later additions and alterations, including a shop front added in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of pinkish-red brick in Flemish bond, with the ground floor painted. It features flat arches made of red gauged brick and renewed stone sills. The roof is covered with plain tiles, and there is a brick stack at the right end.
The house has three storeys and three first-floor windows. The first floor has renewed one-over-one sash windows, while the second floor features eight-over-eight flush sashes, all with renewed sills and flat arches. The ground floor includes a renewed flush plate-glass window with a sill and flat arch. The entrance on the left is a board door set in a renewed doorcase with an open pediment. There is also an off-centre entrance on the right that is part of the shop front, which includes a plate-glass door with an overlight, a glazed window on the apron that is canted towards the door, a fascia, and end pilasters with moulded corbels and a cornice.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this building does not appear on Young's Map from around 1808 but is shown on Clements's Map from 1832. The buildings at Nos. 26-30 College Street form a cohesive group and contribute to the visual approach to the Cathedral of Christ and St Mary.
