Description

This is an early 18th-century house, later used as offices, situated within the College Precincts in Worcester. The building is laid out in an L-shape, featuring an entrance hall on the left and a stairwell positioned between the front and rear rooms. It is constructed of pinkish-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a purple brick plinth, flat arches of gauged dark red brick, ashlar sills, timber keystones, and an architrave. The roof is covered in plain tiles, and two brick stacks are visible on the right end, each topped with pots. Some timber framing is present on the upper floors. There are three storeys plus an attic, and the front of the building has four windows on the first floor.

A three-course band runs along the first and second floors, the first-floor band interrupted by the doorcase. The windows are 2/2 sash windows on the ground and first floors, while the second floor has 6/6 sash windows. All windows are fitted with flat arches of gauged brick, keystones with raised and fielded panels, and sills. A wide moulded cornice runs along the top of the building. The entrance, added in the late 18th century, features a six-panel door with decorative panels, a fluted frieze, and a fanlight with ornate glazing bars. The doorcase is pilastered, adorned with a lozenge motif, and has an open dentil cornice.

The interior contains an openwell staircase with a wreathed handrail, turned balusters (two per tread), and a skylight above. The front ground-floor room features a marble fireplace with a shelf supported by corbels. The attic has a two-raised-and-fielded-panel door and some exposed timbers. A further staircase leads to the roof space, featuring stick balusters. The roof space has wide floorboards and square panels of timber framing to the gable end, along with a level of purlins and rafters, some of which have been renewed, and bracing. Stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops are also present.

The listed buildings within College Precincts create a notable group and contribute to the setting of Worcester Cathedral.
