Description
15 and 16 Edgar Street are a pair of houses located in Worcester, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with possible origins in the 17th century and later alterations, including restorations in 1996 to No. 16. The houses are timber-framed with facades of pinkish-red brick laid in Flemish bond, featuring stuccoed sills and an eaves band. They have a plain tile roof and a central rear brick stack with pots, along with cast-iron grilles.
The layout consists of two rooms deep with a stairwell between, where the front room is narrower to accommodate a side passage. The buildings are two storeys high with a half-basement and attics, featuring two windows on the ground and first floors. Both floors have 6/6 sash windows in near-flush frames with sills, and the first-floor windows have flat arches made of gauged brick. A continuous three-course band runs above the first floor, topped by a modillion eaves band. The outer entrances have six raised-and-fielded-panel doors with three-pane overlights, and there is a continuous stepped frieze and cornice at the ground floor, which bows over the windows. The half-basement has grilles.
The gable-ended attic dormers contain casement windows. At the rear, No. 16 retains casement windows with leaded lights and external latches, including one with a lozenge motif, all of which still have some original glass.
Inside, No. 16 features a raised-and-fielded-panel door to the front room. The dogleg staircase has splat balusters and a plank door leading to the cellar. The kitchen has an elm plank door and a tall, wide fireplace with a plain surround featuring an edge bead. The first floor includes a boxed beam, dado rail, and a six raised-and-fielded-panel door. The attic has exposed purlins and rafters, with a chamfered axial beam at the front and some exposed square panels of timber-framing with later brick nogging.
Nos. 2-16 Edgar Street form a significant group along with Nos. 28-34 Sidbury, Nos. 11 and 12 College Precincts, Tower House at No. 1 Severn Street, and Edgar Tower on College Green. Edgar Street is a fine example of a Georgian street and is part of the setting for the Cathedral.
