Description

This is a pair of houses, numbered 11 and 12, located on the north side of Edgar Street in Worcester. The houses likely have origins in the 17th century, but were largely rebuilt around 1750, with later additions and alterations, including 20th-century roof dormers. They are constructed of pinkish-brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with ashlar quoins. The original section on the left has a plain tile roof, while the roof to the right is in two heights. The rear contains brick stacks with overhanging courses and decorative pots.

The houses are two storeys high with attics, and have two first-floor windows on the left, and two on the right. The ground and first floors feature 6/6 sash windows set in near-flush frames, with flat arches of shaped brick, fluted keystones, cornices, and sills. A modillion eaves band is present on the left side. A pair of central doorways lead to matching entrances, each featuring two steps up to a six-panel door. The upper panels of the doors are raised and fielded, while the lower panels are flush and beaded, with a fanlight above. The doorways are within a shared doorcase with an ovolo mould to the pilasters and rosettes to the cornices, topped by a hood. There are three box roof dormers.

Inside number 12, a closed string staircase retains its original heavy turned balusters, square newels with capping.

Numbers 11 and 12 are part of a significant group of buildings including numbers 2-16 and 28-34, plus properties in College Precincts, Severn Street, and College Green. Edgar Street itself is a fine example of a Georgian street and contributes to the setting of the nearby cathedral.
