Description
30 College Street is a building that originally consisted of two houses but is now used as a shop. It was constructed between 1808 and 1832, with later additions and alterations, including a mid-19th century shop front. The building is made of brownish-red brick in Flemish bond, painted at the ground floor, featuring red brick arches and stone sills. It has a slate roof and truncated brick stacks on both sides.
The building occupies a corner site with a splayed angle and has three storeys. The first floor has two sets of windows: an 8/8 flush sash window and a 4/4 flush sash window at the angle, both with sills, the latter having a flat brick arch. The ground-floor shop front on the left has renewed pilasters and fascia, a two-light window with rounded mullions, and a step leading to a renewed part-glazed door with an overlight and an architrave with sunk panels. To the right, there is another entrance with a renewed part-glazed door and overlight in a timber doorcase. The canted shop front at the angle features columnar mullions with shaped caps and a frieze between plain pilasters, along with shaped corbels and a cornice. The second floor has a 4/4 flush sash and a 2/2 flush sash window. A toothed eaves band is present.
On the right side, there is a renewed plate-glass window at the ground floor, a blocked window with an inserted light at the first floor, and a 3/3 sash window at the second floor. The ground and first-floor openings have cambered arches.
Inside, the building retains a timber partition and a winder stair in the right part, but the rest of the interior has not been inspected. Historically, the building is not shown on Young's Map of 1808 but appears on Clements's Map of 1832. It occupies an important corner site adjacent to Nos. 1 and 2 College Precincts and contributes to the setting of Worcester Cathedral.
