Description
The First World War Memorial, built around 1919, is a war memorial located on College Street in Worcester. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and designed in the Gothic Revival style. The memorial features an octagonal base with seven steps leading up to an octagonal plinth. The plinth has cusped tracery panels adorned with shields displaying regimental coats of arms, a band with fleurons, and battlements. At the top, there is an octagonal shaft surmounted by a cross with foliate decoration. The steps are inscribed with the words: 'The county/ to her sons who gave their lives in the Great War/ 1914 1918/ and to her sons and daughters/ who fell in the Great War of/ 1939 1945'. This memorial is an important feature of the streetscape and contributes to the setting of the Cathedral Church of Christ and St Mary.
