Description
No. 4 College Yard is a house, now used as offices, dating from around 1800. It is constructed of reddish-brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring a stone doorcase and sills, a timber cornice, a plain tile roof, and tall end stacks with renewed oversailing courses and pots. The building has three storeys with attics and three first-floor windows. It has a chamfered brick plinth, with 6/6 sash windows on the ground and first floors, and 3/3 sash windows on the second floor, all set in plain reveals with sills. The windows have flat arches made of darker red gauged brick, with louvered shutters and shutter latches on the first-floor windows.
The entrance is located on the left side, featuring three renewed steps leading to a six-raised-and-fielded-panel door with a fanlight that has gothic glazing bars, topped by an open dentil pediment and flanked by three-quarter engaged columns with palmettes on the capitals. The building has a crowning eaves band and a moulded cornice, along with a low parapet. There are three renewed box dormers with 3/3 sash windows.
Inside, the building retains original plasterwork and joinery, including panelled shutters for the ground and first-floor windows. All the listed buildings in College Yard contribute to the setting of the Cathedral.
