Description

No. 1 King Square is a house that has been converted into offices, dating from around 1770 to 1800. It is constructed of Flemish-bond brick and features stone coping on the parapet, a cornice, painted stepped voussoirs, and cills. The roof is covered with crested double Roman tiles and has brick stacks at the gable ends, along with two 20th-century dormers. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall with an attic and dormer, presenting a two-window range on each facade.

The windows include some crown glass, with 3/6-pane sash windows on the second floor and 6/9-pane sashes on the first floor. The first-floor windows are adorned with segmental wrought-iron balconettes, which still retain some lead ornamentation on the vertical bars. On the ground floor, there is a late 19th-century plate-glass sash window to the left and a 6-pane window over a plate-glass lower sash to the right. The right return features a blocked gauged brick circular window in the attic on the left, and 20th-century horned 6/6-pane sash windows, with the right ground floor window having plate glass in the lower sash.

The entrance is highlighted by a reconstructed wood architrave with an open pediment, set across a flat gauged brick arch. The door consists of four raised-and-fielded panels at the top and beaded panels at the base, topped by a traceried fanlight. To the right of the entrance is the tip of a segmental gauged brick arch leading to the basement. The interior has not been inspected. This house is part of a notable late Georgian square, which was built on the site of Bridgwater Castle.
