Description
The World War Memorial in Bridgwater is a Grade II* listed structure, built in 1924 by John Angel to commemorate the First World War. It is made of granite and features bronze plaques and a statue. The memorial is accessed by three steps, with the third step chamfered and inscribed with "IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF BRIDGEWATER WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918".
The tall square plinth has a shallow raised cross on each side, each bearing plaques that list the names of the fallen soldiers. The central feature is a bronze figure of a seated young woman in a long robe, with her hands outstretched. In her right hand, she holds a hollow globe with small figures standing on it. Flanking her are two kneeling angels with large open wings, each holding the book of law on her knee. The three panels at the rear represent work, family, and learning. Beneath the woman's feet are a skeleton and figures representing Strife, Bloodshed, Corruption, and Despair, all depicted in torment. This memorial is an exceptionally fine and moving tribute, serving as an important focal point in the late Georgian square.
