Description

Nos. 8 and 9 King Square are two houses that form part of a terrace built between 1770 and 1800. They are constructed of Flemish-bond brick, with header-bond brick used on the curved corner bay. The buildings feature stone coping on the parapet, a cornice, stepped voussoirs, cills, and door cases, along with double Roman tile mansard roofs that are hipped at the corner of No. 9, which has a lead roof with rolled joints, and brick stacks on the party walls.

Both houses have a double-depth plan and rise three storeys with attics and basements. No. 8, on the right, has a two-window range, while No. 9 has a five-window range. They are both set slightly back from No. 7 to the right. The second floor features 6/6-pane sash windows, while the first floor has 6/9-pane sash windows; however, the stepped voussoirs have been chiselled flat.

No. 8 has a six-panel door with a semicircular overlight and pilasters that support an open pediment, and the ground-floor window has plate glass. No. 9 features double three-panel doors in a similar doorcase, positioned below one window on both upper floors facing King Square. The left return on Queen Street has a three-window range with levelled-off stepped voussoirs, late 19th-century leaded coloured glass in two ground-floor windows to the right, a cambered brick arch to the basement on the left, and a blocked 20th-century opening to the right. The curved corner bay includes wedge lintels for the curved window frames and a blind door below. The interiors have not been inspected. These houses are part of a notable late Georgian square built on the site of Bridgwater Castle.
