Description

Two houses, built around 1770 to 1800, form the centre of a terrace of five houses in Bridgwater. They were originally part of a larger development on the site of Bridgwater Castle. The houses are constructed of Flemish-bond brick with a steeply-pitched mansard pantile roof to number 12 (the roof of number 11 is not visible) and brick stacks integrated into the shared party walls. The detailing includes stone coping, a cornice, stepped stone voussoirs, cills, a cill-course, and doorcases. The houses have double-depth plans, with three storeys, attics and basements, and are each three windows wide. Number 11 has a semicircular arched doorcase on its left side, with panelled reveals and a door of six raised-and-fielded panels. The ground floor sash windows have 6/6 panes, the first floor windows are taller, with 6/9 panes extending the full height of the windows. Number 12 also has a semicircular arched doorcase and matching detailing. Number 13, on the left, features a wrought-iron balcony with lead ornament to the vertical rails. 20th-century attic dormer windows are present.

Inside number 11, original reeded cornices and dado rails remain. The staircase has stick balusters and a wreathed mahogany handrail with a curtail step. Number 12 retains similar features, but with the addition of late 19th century high dado rails, vertical panelling, and added moulding to the hall and wall of the closed-string staircase.
