Description
The pair of houses at 23 and 25 Castle Street date from the 1820s. They are built in Flemish bond brick with a natural slate roof, gabled at each end, and have brick stacks with pots, some of which are crested. One stack has been roughcast. The houses were likely designed as mirror images of each other. Number 23 has a wide entrance passage on its right side, containing a staircase and a basement staircase. To the left are two rooms, one behind the other, heated by end stacks.
The exterior is asymmetrical with a three-window front. The ground floor windows have segmental heads with rubbed brick arches. Pilastered doorcases have projecting cornices, fielded panelled reveals, and recessed front doors. Number 23 has a six-panel front door with glazed upper panels, while number 25 has a small-pane glazed door. The windows are predominantly two-pane sashes, those in number 23 with horns; there are also barred basement windows.
Inside number 23, early 19th-century joinery remains, including two-panel cupboards and four-panel doors. A stick baluster staircase features turned newels. A deed belonging to the owner of number 25 shows that it was let out in the 1820s.
