Description

61 and 61A Bampton Street is a house dating from around 1720 that has been subdivided. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features a slate roof with gabled ends. The stacks are not visible from the front street.

The building is two storeys high with a basement and has three symmetrical bays on the right, plus an additional bay on the left. It has a timber eaves board, and the symmetrical section includes plain outer pilasters and pilasters flanking the central entrance bay. There is a platband at the first-floor level. The entrance features a fine doorcase with fluted pilasters, panelled reveals, and a dentil frieze. The windows are tripartite timber sashes, likely reglazed in the late 19th or early 20th century but set in their original embrasures.

To the left, there is a passage doorway with two leaves, fielded panels, and a deep overlight, accompanied by a doorcase with pilasters that have sunk panels and a moulded cornice. The basement windows are adorned with exceptionally attractive iron grilles.

Although the interior was not available for inspection at the time of the visit, it is reported to contain many original features.
