Description
The Barley Mow Public House is an early 19th-century establishment, possibly dating from an earlier period. It features a solid rendered front wall and a pantiled roof. There is an old red brick stack on the right-hand side wall, which has been rebuilt, and a late 20th-century red brick chimney on the left side wall, positioned on the front slope of the roof.
The building is two storeys high and has three widely spaced windows on each storey, with a doorway located between the two right-hand ground-storey windows. The right-hand end of the upper storey slightly projects, resembling a jetty. The entrance consists of a plank door with cover strips. The right-hand ground-storey window has 8-paned sashes, while the two left-hand windows have been altered in the late 19th or early 20th century and feature wooden frames with transom lights and frosted glass inscribed with "THE BARLEY MOW INN." The upper-storey windows are sashes with 6 panes below and 3 above.
The interior has not been inspected, but according to the landlord, the ceiling of the ground floor has been raised, resulting in a cramped upper storey. The modest proportions of the building suggest it may be older than the early or mid-19th-century houses typical of the street.
