Description

Two houses with shops, dated circa 1850s, are located on a corner site at 2 Park Street and 22 & 24 Silver Street, Tiverton. The buildings are of mass wall construction, stuccoed and with natural slate roofs and brick chimneys featuring platbands. The plan incorporates a rounded corner, with a direct corner entrance to the shop room of No.24 Silver Street, which has frontages onto both streets. A back room is situated on the Silver Street side. A separate front door on Silver Street provides access to a stair leading to the first floor. No.2 Park Street’s entrance is on the left side, directly into the shop, with a back room behind. A side passage features a door leading to the first-floor stair.

The exterior is two storeys high with a basement. The building has four bays facing Silver Street and three bays facing Park Street, with a corner bay. A platband is positioned at first-floor level, and stone pilasters are present between windows and doors on the ground floor only. Deep eaves are characteristic. The shop entrance to No.24 Silver Street consists of a two-leaf door, each leaf including a lower panel and a glazed upper section of six panes, along with an overlight featuring glazing bars. Plate glass shop windows flank the door. No.2 has a pilastered shop front with a fascia and a glazed shop door with a low panel and deep overlight to the left, and a two-light plate glass window with a mullion to the right. Throughout the property, hornless sash windows with 12 panes are used. A blind recessed corner is above the door of No.24 and over the passageway of No.2. The interior was not inspected but may retain features of interest.
