Description

This pair of houses at 101 and 102 Bampton Street, Tiverton, dates from the 1860s. The houses are built with Flemish bond brick, with number 101 painted and number 102 partially faced with stone. They have slate roofs and brick stacks with platbands.

The buildings sit on a corner site with a rounded end where Park Street, Water Lane, and Silver Street meet. Number 101 originally included a shop on the ground floor. The exterior is two storeys high, with deep eaves supported by brackets. The roof is raised to incorporate a segmental-headed attic dormer in the centre, with slate-hung sides.

Number 101 has an asymmetrical three-window front, plus a half window shared with number 102. It features a former shop window with outer pilasters, a half-glazed door with an overlight, a single six-light window to the left, and a three-light window to the right. A four-pane sash window is present on the ground floor to the right. A VR letterbox made by Smith and Hawkes of Birmingham is set into the wall to the left. The first floor has three four-pane sash windows and a blind recess. The houses share a round-headed window with glazing bars between them. The segmental-headed attic projection has a round-headed casement with decorated spandrels.

Number 102 has a six-panel front door, positioned within a round-headed doorway with a plain fanlight on its right side. A two-pane sash window from the 20th century is on the ground floor to the left. The first floor contains a shared half window with number 101, and the remaining windows are four-pane sashes, mirrored by the dormer window of number 101.

The interior has not been inspected, but may retain features of interest.
