Description

29, 31, and 33 Castle Street is a terrace of three houses built around the 1850s, with No. 29 now subdivided into bedsits. The houses are constructed with mass wall construction and feature brick chimney stacks. No. 29 has a natural slate roof, No. 31 has a turnerised roof, and No. 33 has an asbestos slate roof, with rendered shafts on the stacks.

Each house is double-depth and one room wide, with the entrance door located to the right of the stairs. The rooms are heated by axial stacks that project through the roof on the left side. The exterior consists of two storeys plus basement and attic rooms. Each house has a two-bay, asymmetrical front with channelled rustication on the ground floor, a platband at the first-floor level, and a moulded eaves cornice. The front doors feature plain overlights.

No. 29 has replacement four-pane horned sash windows, with a blocked window above the front door at first-floor level. Nos. 31 and 33 have twelve-pane and eight-pane hornless sash windows, although some glazing bars are missing from the ground-floor window at No. 31. The ground-floor window of No. 33 has horns. All first-floor windows have chamfered reveals. The houses also feature gabled attic dormers with two-light casements, and there are cast-iron grilles over the basement lights and beneath the front doorsteps. The interior has not been inspected but may contain some original features.
