Description

This house, located at 32 and 32A Castle Street in Tiverton, dates to around 1800. It is partly used as a photographer's studio. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick on ashlar limestone footings, with a slate roof featuring gabled ends. The chimneys have brick and roughcast shafts with corbelled cornices and crested pots, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. The house is two rooms wide and two rooms deep, with a central entrance.

The exterior is two storeys and a basement, featuring a three-window front. A pilastered doorcase has a deep, projecting cornice and dentil frieze, with fielded panelled reveals. The entrance door is six-panelled, with fielded panels and glazed middle and upper panels. The ground floor has two windows, and the first floor has three, all reglazed with late 19th or early 20th century horned sashes. A barred window is located in the basement.

The interior includes a flagged passageway. The left-hand block has a new staircase; the right-hand block was not inspected but is said to retain features of interest and may contain the original staircase.
