Description
Castle Barton is a house located in Tiverton, built in the early 19th century, which incorporates earlier materials from Tiverton Castle. It underwent internal renovations and some re-planning in the 1980s. The building is constructed from local volcanic purple rubble and features a slate roof with brick chimney stacks. Designed in the Gothick style, it has a double-depth plan with a central entrance that faces the staircase.
The exterior of the house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical two-window front. The entrance features a half-glazed front door with arched lights and is sheltered by a Gothick porch with a lead roof and trellis sides. The windows on both the ground and first floors are two-light mullioned Gothic casements, also with arched lights and leaded panes. Additionally, there is a bay window on the ground floor at the east end.
Inside, early 19th-century features include a stick baluster staircase and panelled doors. The kitchen contains a lancet window that is part of the medieval fabric of the Castle, which is located to the north. The roof has not been inspected but is reported to be of kingpost design.
