Description

This is a house, possibly dating back to the 17th century or earlier, located on a corner plot where Bampton Street meets Silver Street in Tiverton. It was formerly an inn, and is now subdivided into separate dwellings incorporating the building at No. 21 Silver Street. The construction is of rendered walls, likely built with either stone rubble or cob. The roof is steep, covered with slate tiles, and has asbestos slates at the rear. Brick chimney stacks are prominent.

The building’s layout suggests a 2-room plan for the section fronting Silver Street, and either a 2- or 3-room plan for the section fronting Bampton Street.

The Bampton Street elevation is two storeys high, with three windows. The ground floor has three 3-over-3 pane sash windows to the left and right, and two doors in the centre. The left-hand door is a 4-panel door with glazed upper panels. A modern, half-glazed door is to the right. Above, there are two 3-over-3 pane sash windows. The roof rises into a large attic gable which contains a 3-over-3 pane sash window. The Silver Street elevation has a modern glazed door on the left and another modern glazed door flanked by modern 2-light casement windows. The first floor probably includes 2-light casement windows from the 19th century, with smaller panes of glass.

The interior was not inspected when the building was originally listed. Note that No. 96 Bampton Street and No. 21 Silver Street were formerly listed as separate buildings.
